ViewSonic VA2323wm 23-Inch
I’m impressed with the ViewSonic VA2323wm monitor but I’d be more impressed if it (as most others do) would ship with the digital cord rather than just the standard VGA one. Other than that I’ll be back in a week to follow up and give my impression of it’s game and video response.
Well, it’s not one week yet, but here goes. Highest resolution is indeed 1920×1080 at 60Hz. I do wish it would do 75Hz as playing a TV stream from my WinFast card has a touch of flicker at full screen. I don’t blame the monitor for that as the card is an old analog one and I’m still not using a DVI cable. This is also an older computer (ASUS P4PE 2.67GHz 2G RAM using an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS)
The install CD/DVD has glitches in XP Pro. Some times it just hangs, not sure why. Sometimes going away for a bit then coming back is called for. Once time I had to reboot. But the drivers have been stable so far.
Viewing angle is as expected with LCDs: Nothing out of the ordinary.
Horizontal: Visible from steep angles although the color will shift (darken)
Vertical: A pronounced shift in brightness from off dead center.
Initial setup was a breeze, but I had to resort to Nvidia Control Panel for fine tuning the color and contrast.
The blue LED is annoying at night. You can read by it! What I do is take a bit of electrical tape and stick that over the LED.
Playing with the monitor speakers (I’m an audiophile): well, er.. they have mid-range but lack on treble and bass. I don’t see any adjustment other than volume and mute. The speakers are back/side firing so if you stick the monitor in a hutch (like I do) then they will get muffled. They might be better in a cube or in a corner. It is possible they need a few hours to break in (most speakers need time to break in). Right now I have them playing off my iPod Nanno. Then again I didn’t buy this for a speaker system. Frankly I have never heard a good speaker in any monitor.
All in all I’m happy with this monitor. Still haven’t played Unreal or Half Life with it.
